Certified Muscle Activation Techniques® Practitioner

When a muscle goes quiet, pain is often not far behind.

The Mat Maven finds the muscles that have stopped firing and switches them back on — hands-on biomechanical therapy that treats the cause of pain, not just the ache it leaves behind.

Trained in Muscle Activation Techniques, the neuromuscular method developed by Greg Roskopf and used across professional sport.

The same method trusted in the NFL, PGA, UFC and Olympic training rooms — now on your table.

What MAT is

Tightness is a symptom. Weakness is usually the cause.

Muscle Activation Techniques is a precise, hands-on assessment of how well your muscles are actually contracting. When one muscle becomes inhibited — after stress, injury, or plain overuse — the body braces around it. That bracing is what you feel as tightness, stiffness, and pain.

Stretching a tight muscle chases the symptom. MAT goes after the muscle that quit — restoring the signal between your nervous system and the muscle so your body can let go of the compensation on its own.

The root cause

Muscle inhibition

A muscle that isn’t receiving a clear signal to contract. It doesn’t disappear — it goes quiet, and neighbouring muscles overwork to cover for it.

What you feel

Compensation & bracing

Tight hamstrings, an aching lower back, a shoulder that won’t settle. The tension is protective — the body guarding a link that stopped pulling its weight.

What MAT does

Restores the signal

Targeted, precise contacts wake the inhibited muscle back up. Range of motion returns, the bracing eases, and strength has a foundation to build on again.

Meet your practitioner

Hi, I’m Livv — The Mat Maven.

I’m a certified Muscle Activation Techniques practitioner, and I bring the work to you. Across Huron and Perth County I treat people in their own homes — athletes, weekend warriors, and anyone tired of pain that keeps coming back.

MAT pulled me in because it hunts for the cause instead of chasing the symptom. Finding the muscle that has switched off, waking it back up, and watching someone move freely again — that’s the best part of my day.

Why it’s worth your time

What restoring muscle function actually changes.

i.

Pain relief

Ease the imbalances and compensation patterns underneath the discomfort, so relief holds instead of fading by the next morning.

ii.

Better performance

Muscles that fire on time move you more efficiently — more power on tap, less energy leaking into bracing you never asked for.

iii.

Faster recovery

Restore function early and the body stops layering new compensations on top of an injury, clearing the way for it to heal cleanly.

iv.

Real strength

You can’t strengthen a muscle that won’t switch on. Activate it first, and the work you put in at the gym finally lands where it should.

Inside a session

The method, in four moves.

Every session follows the same logic and ends somewhere specific to you. This is a genuine sequence — each step depends on the one before it.

01

Assess

A range-of-motion evaluation locates the exact muscles that aren’t holding their contraction — the quiet links driving the imbalance.

02

Activate

Precise, hands-on contacts re-establish the communication between nerve and muscle, waking the inhibited muscle back into function.

03

Restore range

As the muscle re-engages, the protective tightness releases and range of motion opens up — stability and mobility returning together.

04

Individualize

No two bodies compensate the same way. Your plan is built around what your assessment revealed, not a fixed protocol.

The method behind the hands

“MAT is about addressing the underlying causes, not just the symptoms.”

Greg Roskopf
Founder of Muscle Activation Techniques

The Mat Maven practices the method Roskopf spent three decades refining — an adjunct to every other form of therapy, and often the link that was missing from it. The goal is never to mask what hurts. It’s to give your tissues the environment they need to heal.

Who it’s for

Recovery, performance, and relief — MAT meets you where you are.

For the active

Athletes & movers

Train hard and small inefficiencies get magnified. MAT keeps your muscles firing in balance so you move well, hit harder, and stay ahead of the injuries that sideline a season.

For the hurting

Chronic pain

If you’ve tried everything and nothing has held, it may be because the root cause was never addressed. MAT looks past the ache to the muscle that stopped supporting the joint.

For the healing

In recovery

Coming back from injury or surgery, or simply asking more of an aging body. MAT restores function and stability so recovery moves forward instead of stalling.

What MAT has helped relieve

Different complaints, one honest question: which muscle went quiet?

MAT is an adjunct to medical care, not a replacement for it. Sessions complement the work of your physician, physical therapist, or trainer — filling the gap the others often leave.

Questions, answered

Before you book.

Anyone living with muscle tightness, pain, or limited mobility — and any athlete looking to get more out of a body that already works. If other therapies haven’t held, or you’d rather prevent the next injury than treat it, MAT addresses the root cause of muscle dysfunction rather than the symptom. Most clients notice improvements in strength, stability, and range of motion within one or two sessions.

The first sign is usually that something just doesn’t feel right — joint pain, tension, or a joint that feels unstable. Tight hamstrings, a tight lower back, shin splints, aching knees, a hyper-extended joint. Persistent tightness or pain is often the body compensating for a muscle that isn’t holding its share of the load.

Because MAT doesn’t stop at relieving symptoms. Where other approaches stretch what’s tight or strengthen what’s weak, MAT examines how your muscles communicate with your nervous system to find where the problem actually starts. Restore proper function and balance, and the body heals itself more effectively — which is why results often hold when other methods haven’t.

Yes. Training at a high level magnifies every inefficiency, and eventually the body can no longer absorb the stress. By balancing the muscular system, MAT creates a better environment for restoring performance — so you return to your sport sooner and with more in the tank.

It can. As we age, muscle imbalances lead to compensations that increase strain on the joints — a major contributor to arthritis pain and stiffness. Addressing muscle weakness before it becomes chronic dysfunction supports healthier aging, protects joint integrity, and keeps you moving.

“Muscle activation” usually means warm-up drills meant to fire muscles up before exercise — general, and fine as far as it goes. Muscle Activation Techniques (MAT) is a specific, hands-on system developed by Greg Roskopf that systematically evaluates and corrects muscle inhibition at its root. It isn’t a warm-up; it’s an assessment and a treatment.
